I have looked at County Health Rankings variables in Pennsylvania correlating them with Trump’s vote at the county level. This time I am looking at the Health Resources and Services Administration Unmet Need Score online tool. You can see where your zip code stands at this tool. This tool provides health data at the zip code level. Zip codes are classified as high need areas if they have a score of 75 or more and it has a population of at least 1,500. The map above shows the 708 zip codes that I am analyzing. The tool uses 67 variables to compute an unmet need score (UNS) for each zip code with complete data. There are 700 zip codes in the sample with a UNS. This is the beginning of a series of posts on the unmet need scores in the Alleghenies.
The box plot above shows the distribution of the UNS for the 700 zip codes. The score ranges from 0 to 96.07. The 15901 zip code has the highest UNS in the sample. It is located in downtown Johnstown. You can see there are 8 outliers at the bottom of the box plot: 15647 (Larimer, PA), 16868 (Weedville, PA), 16638 (Entriken, PA), 16821 (James Creek, PA), 16856 (also James Creek, PA), 15831 (Dagus Mines, PA), 15087 (Webster, PA), and 15625 (Darragh, PA). A of these 8 zip codes have UNS less than 10.
Of more interest to me is the 67 statistics used to compute the unmet need scores in the Alleghenies than the UNS itself. I will look at which factors are the best predictors of mortality in the area. I do not have Trump vote data at the zip code level.
