I thought I would post an update of the PA COVID pandemic numbers since Pennsylvania and Johns-Hopkins have taken their dashboards down in March for the former and in May for the latter. Above is the trend in weekly COVID deaths for Pennsylvania according to the CDC. County level data is no longer publicly available. Also, case numbers are no longer reported.
Since May 24, there have been 224 deaths from COVID in Pennsylvania for a total of 52,566. Reporting in more recent weeks can be slower than before.
The CDC reports hospitalizations and cases. According to the last PA dashboard, there were 260 COVID patients hospitalized in May. Currently, there are 190 in the state. There were 16 patients on a ventilator in the state. It is not reported now for PA. The graph above does show a slight uptick in hospitalizations but is still well below the numbers back in February.
For the U.S. as a whole, hospitalizations increased 48.1% since July 8. In Pennsylvania, the increase was 13.5% which is almost 4 times smaller. For deaths in the U.S., there was an increase of 5,618 to 1,137,057 since May 24 or 0.5%. The increase for PA was 0.4% which is virtually identical. A rise in hospitalizations usually precedes a rise in deaths.
Other measures used to find the prevalence of COVID in the population are the levels of the virus in wastewater. Tracking cases is harder now due to the rise in home COVID tests. Mild cases may never be reported. This update of PA COVID numbers will be repeated in in three months.
