On July 24 & 25, I went to two events: one in Pittsburgh and one in Bellwood, PA. The former was a One Payer States panel on strategies to push for Medicare for All at the state level. The other group was a vigil in honor of the two men killed by ICE in Maine and Texas run by Indivisible Blair County. Though the groups for both events were relatively small, the ideas discussed were big.
One Payer States
The panelists included Steve Larchuck, Chuck Pennachio, Scott Tyson, and others. They spoke of their struggles with health care and their efforts to rectify the situation by persuading states to enact Medicare for All. The audience was small but enthusiastic.
Vigil for Joan and Lorenzo
The next day I went to Bellwood, PA (located north of Altoona). Indivisible Blair County was holding a vigil to “demand justice for Joan (Joan Sebastian Duran Guerrero) and Lorenzo (Lorenzo Salgado Araujo). They were killed by ICE accidentally. Indivisible Blair County’s President, Carol Taylor and others spoke at the event and afterward they held a candlelight vigil.
Trump is very good at creating crises to distract from more mundane one like health care. We need small groups with big ideas to counter act these schemes.
