On day 2 of the 49th Appalachian Studies Association Conference at Marshall University I took video of 2 individual sessions. There were many that day. The first session I filmed is on Race and Health in the Appalachians. The second session I filmed is on emergency response to climate change disasters such as Hurricane Helene.
Race and Health in Appalachia
The session in the video above was a panel discussion on two topics related to race and health in Appalachia. The first session was on “Working the Roots of the Soul: A Qualitative Analysis of Bereavement in the Appalachian Mountain Focusing on Affrilachians” by Sol Robinson of Maryville College. The second session was titled • “Intersectional Healthcare Disparities: Racial, Gender, and Regional Struggles for Black Appalachian Women,” by Maria Morgan of Marshall University. There was supposed to be a third session titled • “Nourishing a Region: The Untold Legacy of Black Appalachian Wet Nurses in American Cultural and Medical History” but the presenter was unable to attend.
Emergency Response to Climate Change Disasters
The second video I took was on emergency response to climate change disasters. This panel moderated by Katie Myers of Blue Ridge Public Radio included medical student and EMT Beau Morgan and Amanda Alexander MD. Beau Morgan also featured in the poster presentations video.
These videos are just scratching the surface of what went on at the conference. The history and struggles throughout Appalachia are similar to what goes on here in the Alleghenies. Sharing stories is beneficial at day 2 of the Appalachian Studies Conference.
