Exhibitors
After viewing the Mine Wars Museum in Matewan, WV, Larry Blalock and I went to the 49th Appalachian Studies Association Conference at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. We were tabling for our site and took videos summarizing day 1 of the Appalachian Studies Conference. The above video summarizes the exhibitors at the conference. It was a hodgepodge of book publishers, authors, activists, academics, and artists. The West Virginia Mine Wars Museum was also one of the exhibitors. There were more than 1,100 people registered for the conference from all over Appalachia.
Poster Presentations
The second video I took of day 1 of the conference was a summary of the poster presentations at the conference. These were a combination of public health, educational, historical, economic and natural science research projects. These projects and exhibitors show that the same struggles that we experience here in the Alleghenies are universal throughout Appalachia.
Keynote Address
The third video I took at the conference was of the keynote address that evening. The speaker was Dr. William Turner. His speech was titled “Been to the Mountaintop” and was entertaining. Before he spoke actresses portrayed Harriet Tubman and Madame CJ Walker.
There was a small session that I filmed that I could not post titled “Tilting the Slope: Photovoices of Brain Injury in Appalachia.” The panelists were brain injury patients who use the technique called photovoices. In this method, these patients use pictures that they take to facilitate communications. I could not use the video because of HIPAA privacy laws so I deleted them.
We met many people from the Alleghenies where they spell the word differently. These include Alleghany, Allegany and possibly other spellings.

For an announcement tomorrow indivisible will be holding the third No Kings rally. The information on the Johnstown rally is seen above. The work continues from what we saw on Day 1 of the Appalachian Studies Conference. Day 2 will be coming next week.
