The Holidays and Public Media

Allegheny Independent Media is now affiliated with Nonprofit Partners. It is a subsidiary of the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. Thru the site you can donate to the website. It is essential to allow us to provide coverage to the critical issues facing the Alleghenies. You may donate to our site here.

The Holidays are upon us. There will be a lot of fundraising appeals to our spirit of giving. We are adding our appeal to this upcoming maelstrom.

Our website is a progressive news site for the Alleghenies.

With news, legal, food and pharmacy deserts now proliferating in the area the need for independent media is more dire than ever. This is fundraising appeal for the Holidays and Public Media.

John Oliver on his HBO show Last Week Tonight gives a good review of the challenges facing public media. Congress killed funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Many in rural areas don’t realize how important public media is until a crisis happens. Reveal at Mother Jones profiles how a public radio station in Alaska saved lives when a typhoon hit. Their podcast is below. Select In Rural America, Public Media Saves Lives.

More To The Story: As NASA’s Artemis II journeyed into space earlier this month, one of the astronauts took a photo of Earth lit by the moon known as “Hello, World.” It’s the first published photograph of our planet taken by a human since 1972. The Artemis mission has reinvigorated mankind’s awe of our planet. But for Earth to remain a habitable place for humans to flourish, it requires us to take care of it.On this special Earth Day episode of More To The Story, we’re featuring interviews with three influential environmental leaders: former Vice President and founder and chairman of the Climate Reality Project Al Gore; longtime activist Catherine Coleman Flowers; and journalist, author, and activist Bill McKibben. All three acknowledge the challenges of fighting climate change to protect our planet, especially at a time when the Trump administration is rolling back federal environmental protections. But they’re surprisingly hopeful about our capacity to protect the Earth for future generations.Listen: The Great Arizona Water Grab (Reveal)Read: Rooftop Solar Is a Miracle. Ken Burns posted the video below to announce that WPSU TV and radio, alocal public media outlet, is acquired by WHYY in Philadelphia.

We are a small outlet with support from the Leveller Foundation. We primarily cover events around Johnstown because, like other rural nonprofit media outlets, we have a skeleton staff: a board and a few contributors. Eventually, we hope to expand our coverage to fill the void left by shrinking newsrooms but we can’t do it without you. At the top of this post is a fundraising appeal to support our work. This is the time for Holidays and Public Media.
