George Galloway, founder of the Workers’ Party of Britain and representative of the left-wing opposition to Labour reformists and the Tories, won the membership for parliament of Rochdale by a 12,335-vote landslide on Friday. Founded in 2019, the Workers’ Party of Britain was openly embraced by the Communist Party of Great Britain and played an active role in contesting Starmer and the Labour Party in Parliament by 2021. Not only were they contested, but both labour and conservative parties were defeated as of Friday—smashing the two-party illusion that the state has held begrudgingly for so long against the working masses.
In the wake on the ongoing genocide in Gaza, British imperialism continues to play an active role in denying Palestinians the right to national self-determination. Following the series of ICJ hearings last month which witnessed the South African case being brought before the court in front of the entire world, the US and British air forces began a barbaric campaign of ruthless bombings against the Houthi resistance for their obstruction of arms shipments to the Israeli forces. It was on this very issue that the deepest point of contention was made. Furthermore, the socialist opposition in its programme aims to pull the UK out of NATO—another brittle and agonizing blow to the neoliberal political order.
On Friday night, Prime Minister Rishie Sunak addressed the people of Great Britain and avowed to shut down pro-Palestine activists, deeming Galloway a threat to their “patriotic, liberal, democratic society”, and engaging in frivolous historical revisionism to atone for the now 40% parliamentary loss of both opposition parties by popular vote. In addition to the party’s policies regarding Palestine and NATO, the programme also includes the national rebuilding of British industry, decent, cheap, and secure housing for all, free and comprehensive healthcare accompanied with cheap and easy access to nutritious food, full state support for the sick and elderly, universal access to a free and fully integrated public transport system with all essential amenities, and more.
