Why Gaza Matters to Us

This site focuses on events in and around the Alleghenies. Why Gaza matters to us? Before I get to that I will discuss this. The video above is from Al Jazeera plus’s YouTube page. It discusses the one sided coverage the U.S. media gives to Israel. It gives the example of media figures taking the claim of Israeli children being beheaded by Hamas fighters at face value. This claim has not been substantiated and Israel refuses to investigate.

YouTube will not allow me to show the video in this website. It has a link to watch it on YouTube. When you watch it there it gives a warning that “The following content may contain graphic or violent imagery.” The video has less violent content than the video below from the same Al Jazeera Plus channel on YouTube. The video has no warning of violent content as the one at the top does. Is the criticism of the U.S. Media the real reason for the warning?

Almost 2 million people live in the Gaza Strip which covers 88 square miles. This gives a population density of 21,000 people per square mile. This is almost 4 times greater than the population density of Los Angeles and almost 6 times greater than that of Washington, DC. They have been living in abject poverty since Israel imposed a blockade in 2008. You can now see how bloody a ground invasion of Gaza would be.

Why Does This Matter to Us?

Back to the question of why Gaza matters to us here in the Alleghenies. The censorship used in the U.S. media to maintain support for Israel’s retaliation for Hamas’ attacks on October 7 prevents the public from seeing the full picture of the conflict. Yes Hamas’ actions innocent Israelis were not morally justified but Israel’s continued occupation and retaliation against innocent civilians in Gaza is also unjustified.

Censorship in the media nationally or in the media locally impedes the public from making informed choices. Israel already receives $3 billion annually in assistance from the U.S. What other things could be built here with that money? We already have troops deployed in the Middle East (Iraq and Syria) who are likely to receive blowback from this assault. Some of these soldiers call the Alleghenies home.
