A Commemoration of the Lilly-KKK Incident

The second day of commemorations by the Battle of Homestead Foundation and the Pennsylvania Labor History Society focused on the gun battle between the KKK and the Catholic immigrant coal miners in Lilly, PA in 1924. The day began with introductions of guest speaker Chuck Knissell International Vice President United Mine Workers of America, District 2. Jacqui Cavalier, History professor at the Community College of Allegheny County, followed him to speak on how women won the right to vote. Kipp Dawson spoke on the “struggles of Women and African Americans in the Workforce.” Due to an error in editing, Chuck Knissel appears at the end of the first video. There were some sound issues as well.

The second part includes a discussion of the events in Lilly in 1924. The event ended after that. The battle between the KKK and the Catholic immigrant coal miners in Lilly began when one of the KKK was fired from a mine there.
